01 โ€” The Fact

Land animals killed for food / year

Roughly 2,630 lives end every second. By the time you finish reading this sentence, nine thousand more.

The Life

She would have lived twenty years.

A hen in a wild flock dust-bathes, sleeps in trees, recognises over a hundred faces of her sisters. In the industry's calendar, she is granted six weeks. Her body grows so fast her legs cannot carry her.

The Life

He learns his name. He never hears it again.

Pigs solve puzzles a four-year-old child cannot. They dream. They mourn. In a gestation crate two feet wide, a sow cannot turn around for the four months she is pregnant. Then she is impregnated again.

03 โ€” The Fact

1 day

Average time a dairy calf stays with his mother

For you to drink her milk, her child cannot. The bond is severed within hours. Both will cry for days.

The Life

She calls for him across the fence until her voice gives out.

Cows form lifelong friendships and grieve their dead. The dairy industry depends on a cycle of forced pregnancy, separation, and loss โ€” repeated until her body fails at age four. Her natural lifespan is twenty.

04 โ€” The Fact

2.7T

Wild fish pulled from the ocean each year

We measure them in tonnes because the number of individuals is too large to comprehend. The oceans are being emptied in our lifetime.

The Life

There is no quiet way to suffocate.

Fish feel pain. They have culture, tool use, long memories. Pulled from depth, their organs rupture before they reach the deck. Many are still alive when they are gutted. We do not see them die โ€” and so we say it does not happen.

Male chicks ground up alive each year

They cannot lay eggs. They are the wrong breed for meat. The egg industry's response, in every country that allows it, is the same: a macerator at one day old.

The Life

He is sorted on a conveyor belt at one day old.

His sister is taken to a battery cage where she will lay around 300 eggs a year โ€” more than twenty times what her wild jungle-fowl ancestors laid. He is taken to a grinder. The carton on your shelf does not mention him. It cannot.

06 โ€” The Fact

80%

Of Amazon deforestation driven by cattle ranching

The lungs of the planet are being cleared for hamburger. A football pitch of rainforest disappears every six seconds, and most of it becomes grazing land or feed crops for animals.

The Life

The forest does not grow back inside a single lifetime.

Where a jaguar walked, a steer now stands. Where a thousand species shared the canopy, one species grazes for eighteen months and is gone. The soil compacts. The rain stops coming. The land remembers what it was, but cannot return.

Violent-crime rate in slaughterhouse towns

The cost of cheap meat is not only paid by animals. The people who do this work โ€” disproportionately migrants and the poor โ€” carry trauma the rest of us are spared. Towns built around slaughterhouses show roughly double the violent-crime rate of comparable communities.

The Life

He stops counting after the first thousand.

A line worker kills one animal every twelve seconds for eight hours. Domestic violence, substance abuse, and suicide rates spike in the towns these plants are built in. The industry knows. The OSHA reports know. We just don't see them.
