Cows form lifelong friendships and grieve their dead. The dairy industry depends on a cycle of forced pregnancy, separation, and loss — repeated until her body fails at age four. Her natural lifespan is twenty.

Wild fish pulled from the ocean each year
We measure them in tonnes because the number of individuals is too large to comprehend. The oceans are being emptied in our lifetime.

Fish feel pain. They have culture, tool use, long memories. Pulled from depth, their organs rupture before they reach the deck. Many are still alive when they are gutted. We do not see them die — and so we say it does not happen.

Male chicks ground up alive each year
They cannot lay eggs. They are the wrong breed for meat. The egg industry's response, in every country that allows it, is the same: a macerator at one day old.

His sister is taken to a battery cage where she will lay around 300 eggs a year — more than twenty times what her wild jungle-fowl ancestors laid. He is taken to a grinder. The carton on your shelf does not mention him. It cannot.

Violent-crime rate in slaughterhouse towns
The cost of cheap meat is not only paid by animals. The people who do this work — disproportionately migrants and the poor — carry trauma the rest of us are spared. Towns built around slaughterhouses show roughly double the violent-crime rate of comparable communities.
The Life
A line worker kills one animal every twelve seconds for eight hours. Domestic violence, substance abuse, and suicide rates spike in the towns these plants are built in. The industry knows. The OSHA reports know. We just don't see them.
