The Colour-Drinking Celery

Prove that plants drink — by turning celery blue.

⏱️ 10 min + overnight🧑 Grown-up helper needed

What you need

  • A celery stick with leaves
  • A glass of water
  • Food colouring

What you do

  1. Add lots of food colouring to the water.
  2. Grown-up: trim the bottom of the celery.
  3. Stand the celery in the glass and leave it overnight.
  4. Next day, look at the leaves — and snap the stalk to see the coloured tubes.

What's really happening

Tiny tubes called xylem carry water from roots to leaves. Water escapes from the leaves and pulls more water up behind it.
