Cow
- Low rumbling moo — Usually a mother calling her calf, or a calm 'I'm here'.
- High, loud moo — Often distress — hunger, or calling for a missing companion.
Pig
- Short happy grunt — Contentment — often while eating or greeting a friend.
- Loud squeal — Fear, pain or protest. Piglets squeal to call their mother.
Chicken
- Rapid 'buk-buk-buk' then a shriek — Aerial alarm — a bird of prey above.
- Soft repeated clucking with pecking — 'Food here!' — a hen telling her chicks she's found something good.
- The egg song — A loud cackle after laying an egg. Scientists aren't sure why hens do it.
These are descriptions, not recordings — scientists work out meanings by watching what happens right before and after each call.
