Seed Detective

Open up your kitchen and find the seeds hiding in your food.

What you need

  • Apple, tomato, pepper, cucumber, sunflower seeds, dried beans
  • A magnifying glass
  • Paper

What you do

  1. Sort your foods into 'has seeds inside' and 'is a seed'.
  2. Count the seeds in one apple and one tomato.
  3. Look at each seed with the magnifying glass and draw it.
  4. Predict which ones would grow. Try planting three and find out.

What's really happening

A fruit is the part of a plant that carries seeds — which is why tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are botanically fruits.
