Watch worms turn scraps into soil.

⏱️ 45 min + weeks watching🧑 Grown-up helper needed

What you need

  • A large clear jar
  • Sand
  • Soil
  • Leaves and vegetable scraps
  • A few earthworms from a garden
  • Dark paper

What you do

  1. Layer soil and sand in stripes in the jar.
  2. Add leaves and small scraps on top.
  3. Add the worms gently and cover the jar with dark paper.
  4. Keep it damp and cool. Peek every few days.
  5. After two weeks, return the worms to the garden.

What's really happening

Worms mix the layers as they tunnel, dragging leaves down and leaving nutrient-rich casts behind.

Stay safe

Always return wild animals to where you found them.
