Pigs:AsSmartasaThree-Year-Old,TreatedLikeCargo

Pigs solve puzzles, recognize their names, play with toys, and form lifelong friendships. They also spend their lives in metal crates barely larger than their bodies.

Intelligence

Smarter Than Your Dog

Roughly 1.4 billion pigs are slaughtered every year for food — more than any large mammal humans raise. Cognitive scientists routinely rank them as more intelligent than dogs and roughly on par with a three-year-old human child. They use mirrors, learn video-game-style joystick tasks, and have distinct vocal 'dialects' between herds.

Almost all of them — over 95% of pigs in the U.S. and the majority globally — live their entire lives inside windowless intensive-confinement systems. Mother pigs spend most of their adult lives in gestation and farrowing crates so narrow they cannot turn around. Piglets are castrated and have their tails docked without anaesthetic.

Pigs are arguably the clearest example of a contradiction industrial agriculture cannot resolve: an animal everyone privately accepts is intelligent and emotional, raised in conditions almost no one would defend if they had to watch.

The crate

A Life Inside a Metal Frame

A gestation crate is a steel-bar enclosure roughly 60 cm wide. The breeding sow is locked inside for the entire 16-week pregnancy. She can stand up and lie down — that is all. She cannot turn around. She cannot reach her own piglets without injury. She is then moved to a farrowing crate, which is the same dimensions, where she nurses through bars while the piglets feed on the other side.

After weaning at three weeks, the cycle restarts. A modern sow typically endures 6–8 of these cycles before being slaughtered for low-grade meat, exhausted and lame.

A pig can learn her name in two weeks. A gestation crate keeps her from turning her body for sixteen.

What you can do

Pork Is Replaceable. Bacon Is Too.

Smoked tofu, tempeh bacon, mushroom 'lardons,' jackfruit carnitas — and the new generation of plant pork from Impossible, OmniPork and La Vie — replace pork in every category from breakfast to BBQ. Cured-meat character (smoke + salt + fat + umami) is a flavour profile, not a tissue, and the plant-based industry has spent a decade learning to reproduce it.

If you eat pork only at breakfast, swapping that one meal eliminates more than half of your annual pork footprint. There is no easier high-impact change in a typical Western diet.

Pigs

Skip pork for one week. See how little you miss.
