Short answer
No. Leather is animal skin, and it is not a byproduct — global leather revenue keeps beef and dairy farming profitable.

The detail
Leather represents ~10% of a cow's slaughter value and is treated as a co-product, not a byproduct — meaning leather demand directly funds slaughter. Chrome tanning also causes major environmental damage (Kanpur, Dhaka).
Plant-based leathers made from mushroom (Mylo), cactus (Desserto), pineapple leaf (Piñatex), and apple pulp now perform comparably to real leather at similar or lower price points.
