The detail
Best low-impact vegan fibres: organic cotton, linen, hemp, and Tencel/Lyocell (closed-loop wood pulp). Recycled polyester reuses existing plastic and avoids virgin fossil fuel, though it still sheds microfibres.
Wool and silk involve mulesing, live-plucking, and boiling silkworms in cocoons; down is often live-plucked; fur farming keeps mink, fox and raccoon dogs in cages for their entire short lives. See our vegan-beauty and vegan-fashion pages.
