Not vegan
Is casein vegan?
Why
casein is derived from cow's milk, which means a calf was separated from its mother for it to exist.
Casein is not vegan. It is the main protein in mammalian milk, making up around 80% of the protein in cow's milk, and it is dairy in every form including caseinates.
Where it comes from
- Precipitated from skimmed milk with acid or rennet, then washed and dried.
- Sodium, calcium and potassium caseinate are neutralised versions used for solubility.
- Micellar casein is the slow-digesting supplement form.
- Casein is also used industrially in glues, paints and some paper coatings.
Names to look for on the label
- Casein, caseinate
- Sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate, potassium caseinate
- Micellar casein
- Milk protein, milk solids
- Paracasein, rennet casein
The trap is 'dairy-free' or 'non-dairy' products: US labelling rules historically allowed non-dairy coffee creamers and some 'vegan' cheeses to contain sodium caseinate for stretch and melt. Read past the front-of-pack claim to the allergen line — casein must be declared as milk. Genuinely vegan cheeses use starch, coconut oil, cashew or fermented plant protein for the same texture.
Commonly hides in
- cheese
- bread
What to use instead
pea protein — It does exactly the same job in coffee, cooking and baking, with no change in method.
How to check a label
Ingredient lists are legally required to name allergens such as milk and egg in bold, which catches most hidden animal ingredients. E-numbers and processing aids are the gap: E120, E441, E542, E904 and E920 are animal-derived, and processing aids often go unlisted. When in doubt, look for a certified vegan mark or ask the manufacturer directly — most reply within a few days.
Common questions about casein
Can a product say dairy-free and still contain casein?
In some markets, yes — 'non-dairy' has historically been a marketing term rather than a strict legal one, most notoriously on coffee creamers. The allergen declaration is the reliable check.
Is casein in vegan cheese?
It should not be, and certified vegan cheeses never contain it, but some older 'vegetarian' melting cheeses use casein for stretch. Check for a vegan mark.
Is sodium caseinate vegan?
No. Sodium caseinate is casein neutralised with sodium hydroxide; the protein still comes from milk.
