Is whey vegan?
Why
whey is derived from cow's milk, which means a calf was separated from its mother for it to exist.
Whey is not vegan. It is the liquid fraction left over when milk is curdled to make cheese, so every form of it — powder, concentrate, isolate, hydrolysate — is a dairy product.
Where it comes from
- Cheese-making splits milk into curds (casein) and whey; the whey is dried into powder.
- Whey protein concentrate is roughly 35–80% protein, isolate 90%+, hydrolysate pre-digested for faster absorption.
- Sweet whey comes from rennet cheeses, acid whey from yoghurt and cottage cheese production.
- Whey permeate and lactose powder are the cheaper fractions used as bulking agents in processed food.
Names to look for on the label
- Whey, whey powder, sweet whey
- Whey protein concentrate / isolate / hydrolysate
- Whey permeate, demineralised whey
- Lactalbumin, lactoglobulin
- Milk solids (may include whey)
Whey turns up far beyond protein shakes: crisps and flavoured snacks, bread, chocolate, biscuits, instant soups and 'milk chocolate' coatings all use it as a cheap protein and browning agent. As a milk derivative it must be declared as an allergen in the EU, UK and US, so the bolded allergen line is the fastest check. Pea, soy, rice, hemp and blended plant proteins are the equivalents for sports nutrition.
Commonly hides in
- dark chocolate
- bread
What to use instead
pea protein — It does exactly the same job in coffee, cooking and baking, with no change in method.
How to check a label
Ingredient lists are legally required to name allergens such as milk and egg in bold, which catches most hidden animal ingredients. E-numbers and processing aids are the gap: E120, E441, E542, E904 and E920 are animal-derived, and processing aids often go unlisted. When in doubt, look for a certified vegan mark or ask the manufacturer directly — most reply within a few days.
Common questions about whey
Is whey protein vegan?
No. Whey protein is derived from cow's milk. Pea protein isolate has a comparable amino-acid profile once blended with rice protein.
Is whey vegetarian?
It is dairy, so it is vegetarian in principle, but whey from rennet-set cheese may involve animal rennet. Vegetarian-certified whey uses microbial rennet.
Does whey appear in savoury food?
Frequently. Flavoured crisps, seasoning blends and instant sauces use whey powder as a carrier, which is why savoury snacks are a common accidental slip.
