Is shellac vegan?

Not vegan

Why

shellac is produced by insects. Vegans avoid it because it takes a product from animals that are farmed, transported and often killed in the process.

Shellac is not vegan. It is a resin secreted by the female lac insect (Kerria lacca) onto tree branches; harvesting scrapes the resin off with the insects still in it, and large numbers are killed and filtered out during processing.

Where it comes from

  • Lac insects colonise host trees in India and Thailand and secrete a protective resin as they feed on sap.
  • Branches are cut and scraped ('sticklac'), then washed, heated and filtered into flakes.
  • Estimates commonly cited in the trade put the number of insects at roughly 100,000 per kilogram of shellac.
  • Bleached, dewaxed and 'pharmaceutical grade' shellac are all the same insect resin with extra purification.

Names to look for on the label

  • Shellac
  • E904
  • Confectioner's glaze
  • Resinous glaze
  • Pharmaceutical glaze
  • Lac resin / lac
  • Natural glaze

Shellac is what makes shiny sweets, coated chocolate lentils, jelly beans, glossy apples and some coated tablets look polished. The euphemisms matter more than the word itself: 'confectioner's glaze' and 'resinous glaze' on an otherwise plant-based sweet are the usual giveaways. Carnauba wax (E903) and candelilla wax (E902) are the plant waxes used in vegan-certified equivalents.

What to use instead

seaweedIt does exactly the same job in coffee, cooking and baking, with no change in method.

How to check a label

Ingredient lists are legally required to name allergens such as milk and egg in bold, which catches most hidden animal ingredients. E-numbers and processing aids are the gap: E120, E441, E542, E904 and E920 are animal-derived, and processing aids often go unlisted. When in doubt, look for a certified vegan mark or ask the manufacturer directly — most reply within a few days.

Common questions about shellac

Is E904 vegan?

No. E904 is the additive number for shellac, which is an insect secretion, so it is excluded from a vegan diet.

What is confectioner's glaze made of?

Confectioner's glaze is shellac dissolved in alcohol. The friendlier name does not change the source.

Is shellac on apples vegan?

Waxed fruit may be coated with shellac or with carnauba wax. Unpackaged fruit is rarely labelled, so buying unwaxed or organic fruit — or washing thoroughly — is the practical route.
