Is isinglass vegan?
Why
isinglass is made from fish or shellfish, so it is an animal product even when it appears only as a trace processing ingredient.
Isinglass is not vegan. It is a form of collagen made from the dried swim bladders of fish and is used as a fining agent to clarify beer and wine — even though it is filtered out, the drink is not animal-free.
Where it comes from
- Swim bladders, historically from sturgeon and now mostly from tropical fish species, are dried and processed into sheets or powder.
- Added to the fermenting vessel, it binds yeast and haze particles so they settle out faster.
- Most of it is removed with the sediment, but trace residues remain and the process itself uses an animal product.
- Gelatin, chitosan (from shellfish), casein and egg albumen are used for the same job in other drinks.

Cask ales and some traditional bitters are the classic isinglass users; most modern craft beer, lager and canned beer is unfined or filtered mechanically. Wine may use casein, albumen or gelatin instead. Barnivore is the community database people actually use to check a specific brand, and 'suitable for vegans' on the back label is now common in UK and EU supermarkets.

How to check a label
Ingredient lists are legally required to name allergens such as milk and egg in bold, which catches most hidden animal ingredients. E-numbers and processing aids are the gap: E120, E441, E542, E904 and E920 are animal-derived, and processing aids often go unlisted. When in doubt, look for a certified vegan mark or ask the manufacturer directly — most reply within a few days.

Is Guinness vegan now?
Guinness stopped using isinglass in its draught and canned stout in 2017 and describes it as vegan-friendly; check the specific variant, as speciality brews can differ.
Why is beer not always vegan?
The ingredients — water, malt, hops, yeast — are plant-based, but the clarifying step may use isinglass, gelatin or other animal finings that do not appear on the label.
How can I check if a beer or wine is vegan?
Look for an explicit 'suitable for vegans' statement, a Vegan Society trademark, or check the brand on Barnivore. Unfined and 'naturally hazy' beers are usually safe.
